Holbeach cabinet 15 (Holbeach Hurn)

#1
I see the new fibre cabinet has been installed and also a new copper cabinet, just wondering if any one knows when it will be online and also what we will be getting in the village as the cabinet is a fair way away from the centre of the village. Hoping for a better speed than at the min (1.7meg).

Good Morning Marcus,

Thanks for getting in touch.
We are looking at around the third or fourth week in August at the the latest. I know the cabinet is a little delayed, not being helped by being wiped out by a vehicle recently, but we are back on track now.
In terms of distance, you should get Superfast speeds up to around 1.3Km from the cabinet (subject to normal line conditions etc) and this then slopes off until you arrive at circa 3Km when it disappears.

Should that be the case with you, then please be assured that we are looking at other technologies that will pick up the longer line lengths and significantly improve speeds.

Thanks for the info Steve, just measured from my house to cabinet on google earth going by road and it's 2km assuming the copper follows the road.
#4
Hi Marcus,

Assuming it follows the road and the link is in decent order, you should still get around 12Mb/s based upon the graphs I'm looking at, but clearly, a number of factors can affect this.

Any update on cabinet 15 ?
#6
Hi Marcus,

The latest view is that we should be ready to go at the end of this month. I will get the very latest at my meeting with BT on Thursday.

Any update from the meeting on Thursday ?

Did cabinet 15 get powered up as planned this week ?
#9
Hi Marcus,

It was due to be powered up yesterday. I will check with BT later to ensure this happened and assuming it did, it should be ready to go in the next few weeks.

Any updates on cabinet 15 ?
#11
Hi Marcus

Power supply was due into the Cabinet on 7th september and I'm told all other work is now complete, so we are expecting completion by the end of this month.
As soon as it goes 'Live' we will update the website (normally every Friday afternoon).

No know if anyone can shed any light. I've been checking the bt wholesale adsl checker regular to see if the fibre has been sorted for cabinet 15, I was delighted to see today that it's on. So I headed over to the sky website to see if I was able to upgrade my basic broadband to the fibre. After hitting the "check if you are able to get fibre" button I was happy to see it said yes and my speed would be between 12.8 & 18.8 meg. So I rang them to upgrade, all went fine and the order was accepted until about an hour later when I got a text to say there was a problem. I rang them and apparently the copper cable to the cabinet isn't good enough to support the speeds ???? Was told would have to wait for them to be upgraded.

Good Morning Marcus

I'm not sure where they would have got that information from. It isn't something that we are aware of. BT are here thisa morning so I will ask them and get back to you later.

Thanks Steve, I was very happy to see it available yesterday as been waiting ages for it to be live but my happiness was short lived when sky told me this.
#15
Hi Marcus,

I have spoken with BT and confirmed what I believed to be the case.

There are no known cable issues in that cabinet area and Sky would not be in a position to be able to comment on the state of the existing infrastructure. The projected figures on the BT DSL Checker would be the figures that all ISPs would use as indicative.

Hi Steve, an update for you. I contacted sky again and there still saying the openreach system is rejecting the order as there saying our line is weak and not capable of high speed internet and they need upgrading. Although she says she's managed to get the order to go through at the minute but could still be rejected. Maybe the system they are using needs updating :-) just to note she still quoted my predicted speed to be 12 - 18 meg. I will wait and see what happens on the order process in the next 24 - 48 hours.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks very much for the update.

Looks like good news finally, but please do keep us informed how things go and what speeds you actually achieve. We have a growing interest in end-user experience and I am looking to establish 'Reality' in terms of end user experience.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, it's been rejected again :-(

Hi Steve,

Another update for you. Just spoke to sky again asking why it rejected my order. They are saying it's because of the line quality from my house to the exchange, which is sort of understandable because it's 4 - 5 km to the exchange hence why I only get 1.8 meg standard broadband. I asked why that matters because I want transfering to fibre which means my line length only matters to the cabinet which is under 2 km away. She says that sky need to transfer my line to another system first and that's why its failing because of the long line and poor quality to the exchange. Getting really frustrated with them now.

Hi Marcus,

I never cease to wonder at some of the stories customers are getting from various ISPs including BT. Sadly, it's a case of left hand/right hand not knowing what the other is doing and this tends to be compounded by a lack of training within the various call centres, where knowledge of the workings of the product seems to be at a premium.

Under the process, BT will notify all ISPs that a specific cabinet has gone 'Live' and this message is sent to all known ISPs at the same time, including BT Retail. This state of readiness is known as RFS. We would normally allow 2 weeks from RFS to allow ISPs to update their records and then we declare the cabinet ready for Customers (CRFS).
It would appear that some ISPs are very slow to update the records and this sounds as though Sky still haven't completed this process. The 2 week window is nationally accepted as standard.

Please keep me posted, as this seems to be a growing problem with other cabinets and customers affected in the same way with various ISPs.

I am trying to gather sufficent evidence to raise the matter with BDUK so that they can take it up at their level.

Thanks for your ongoing support and patience and hopefully, Sky get this sorted for you soon.

Been watching this one on here for a few weeks now as I too wanted to upgrade once the cabinet went 'live'.

I too am in Holbeach Hurn and currently with BT. I guess this must have helped as I have an order in and an engineer visit booked for Monday 27th to install. Hopefully all will go well and I don't get the same issues as you Marcus. Looking forward to finally getting into the 21st century as I currently only get roughly 2.0 meg.

Another update for u Steve
Had a phone call from sky this morning telling me they have a work around that lets them bypass the system that keeps failing my order, after 20 mins of being on hold the order went through and they assured me that my fibre broadband will go live on 28th of Oct, with an estimate speed of between 13 - 19 Mbps. As an added bonus they are giving me 6 months for free ! So fingers crossed it all happens and I'll update u on the final speed after its all settled in.

Good look Ian with your fibre install, it's about time Holbeach Hurn got brought into the future.
All we need now is FTTP then I'll be well happy !!!

Good Morning Marcus,

Thanks very much for the update.

Looks like Sky has found a way forward finally. I really couldn't see why they were quoting line quality previously when BT's system was quoting higher figures that all ISPs were able to access.

Anyway, fingers crossed and 6 months free rental helps.

Hi Steve,

Today was the BIG day ! The fibre was activated in time for me getting home from work.

Speed test is showing 15 mbps down & 1.5 mbps up with a ping of 15 ms.

Downloaded a 1 gb file earlier in under 10 mins rather than the usual 1 hr +.

Simple things like streaming full HD content without buffer is now a breeze.

Thanks for all your info & updates over the past few months. I'm now very happy...until I hear there's gonna be more progress on getting the fibre closer to the premises :-)

Hi Marcus,

Many thanks for the update and it's great news that things seem to be working well for you.

Hi Stephen I thought I'd dig this post back to the top !!
I have just been speaking to a broadband engineer that my uncle has had round sorting his connection and we got talking about fibre. He informs me that as I am paying for a fibre service but getting under 30 meg (14 meg is my current speed), openreach have to install a new cabinet closer to the premises to bring the speed up to 30 meg minimum otherwise they can't sell us it as fibre. Is this true and if so how do we go about this :-)
#27
Good Morning Marcus,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Sadly, the information from the engineer is inaccurate. The broadband packages specify speeds 'Up to' a certain level i.e 'Up to 38Mb/s', 'Up to 76Mb/s' etc. It is this wording that provides a certain degree of latitude in their marketing.

Whether this is right or wrong is a debate for OFCOM to deal with I would suggest, but certainly we wouldn't be looking to provide additional cabinets at additional cost in this instance.

Steve
