The BT checker shows I am on the Folkingham exchange but no cabinet number. Does that mean I am on an Exchange Only line... What does that mean for the Onlincs update as it moves towards us from Culverthorpe?

Good Afternoon Howard,

What you are seeing would tend to support your comments, but if you would be kind enough to send me your full address, postcode and landline number (In confidence) to my E Mail address below, I will take a look and give you a clearer view on what is going on.

Email just sent Steve. Are EO lines part of the project? Fingers crossed... :)

Good Morning Howard,

Some EO lines are a part of the overall project, but not all.

I have answered your query on E Mail.

Thanks very much Steve.

So for EO line upgrades (Welton etc) I guess the Exchange becomes the "green cabinet" in effect. Speed would then be determined by distance from the exchange. ('im about 526 mettres according to Sam Knows).

Does this mean EO upgrades are a bit less involved as there are no fibres to be routed to local cabinets?

Can't wait the "gubbins" to reach us. You wouldn't think I was an IT instructor in the FO lol :)

Good Afternoon Howard,

My apologies if my previous explanation was a little vague.

With EO lines, they run directly from Exchange to end user and the broadband electronics are in the Exchange.
When we upgrade EO lines, we intercept the cable between Exchange and end users and build an old style cabinet on the cable. Therefore the EO lines now go via a cabinet. We then build a new cabinet adjacent to this cabinet and connect the electronics to the old style cabinet. There is a fibre between the Exchange and the new cabinet.

On that basis, EO lines tend to be more costly and time consuming then lines currently going via existing cabinets.

Steve

Just seen in update yesterday (13 March 15)...

"Billingborough 3 Traffic management complete in Culverthorpe which has been directly affecting this cabinet. Contractors have started works on the main feed for Billingborough and Folkingham cabinets."

Happy Easter bunnies this side of Culverthorpe!

I thought as I am on the extreme edge of town, on an EO line, that everyone else would be too (with a population of about 700).

Walking the dogs the other day I found a cabinet (No. 3) in same street. Must be because they ran out of EO lines? Just wondering....

Hi Howard,

The BT infrastructure, in some cases, was designed and built many years ago and since then, in many areas the relationship between the infrastructure and population distribution has changed. Without seeing BT's cable and duct distribution plans for the area it is difficult to comment accurately, but a mix of EO lines and cabinets in the same small area isn't unusual.

Has there been any date applied to the folkingham upgrade does anyone know?
#11
Hi Rob,

BT are still saying the end of June for Cabinets 1 & 3 and the end of September for the EO that are amalgamated.
I will try to get a more specific timescales at next week's meeting with them.

Rob and Steve - good news. Currently in Bogota reading this - the roadworks.org site is also very useful. See Aslackby is getting some BT "lurve" at the moment :)

Description: 307492 IBL04AKT - FPC WORKS
Works ref: BC005MU1WBDUK0IBL04AKT

Just seen this on roadworks.org and it is listed for BT netween 8 and 19 June. Traffic lights at either end of West Street. Anything to do with start of work in our area. Wondered what FPC WORKS might be? "Fabulous Placement of Cable" lol :)

Blow me down. Not an hour later a BT truck parked outside (Churchfields Rd) and a chap started opening manhole covers. I rushed out and asked if it was in connection with Fibre. It was! He was laying rope ready for the cable pullers. The spine goes along West Street and into Churchfields. This was for the cabinets only (not EO) and informed DSLAM already in place in exchange. I might have a lie down....

Hi Howard,

I'm connected to Folkingham's neighbouring exchange of Billingborough and as much as I hate to put a downer on your spirits, you could still yet be in for a long wait, I'm not saying you will be but please don't get too excited yet.

With regards to the rope laying in the ducting ready for the fibre, I remember the BT Open Reach staff laying these ropes in the ducting late last summer 2014 between Billingborough and Pointon. We're now into June of the following year and cabinets 2 & 3(which the rope laying related to) are still yet to be enabled - just 3 weeks shy of being a YEAR late (phase 3).

Even Cabinet One of Billngborough which is in phase 5 (completion by end of June 2015) hasn't even been installed yet, let alone be ready by then end of this month.

As for the DSLAM in the exchange, this is for your existing up to 8Mbps ADSL service, and NOT the 'fibre' service. The fibre service uses VDSL technology and this is placed directly in the new cabinets themselves and are then the fibre linked directly back to the Sleaford town exchange - completely bypassing the Folkingham exchange.

I'm not saying your fibre date will be delayed - you may get lucky and it will be delivered on time or sooner. I'm just giving you a gentle reminder that you could yet still be in for a lengthy wait, just like the residents of Billingborough and Pointon have been and going from the lack of the build of cabinet one, Horbling residents will be as well.

However, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Terry... yep all understood. I used to be with IT projects so lol....

As long as it comes. Want to get the new BT TV service starting autumn with 4K UHD sport channel. Ever the optomist :)
#17
2 Openreach vans were unrolling cables this morning in West Street...
#18
Thanks Terry. Cables being laid around my street today (presumably for cabinet). EO later I expect.

In today's new (w/e 2July) see that Folkingham 1 due to go live soon and cab 3 end of September. Excellent progress. Any rough idea on those dreaded EO lines? You have my address Steve :)
#20
Good Morning Howard,

Thanks very much and we are told that the EO lines are due at the end of September. At this point in time, we have no reason to believe we will not hit that date.

Steve

Steve,

Noted that cabs nearby are about to go live. As an EO householder are we still due around end of autumn. I'm saving my downloads lol....

Good Afternoon Howard,

The expected date for Folkngham EO lines is 30th September and to date, I've heard nothing to suggest we will not complete on or around that date.

Spoke with BT engineer last week working on new cabinet just inside exchange gate. He confirmed it was for EO lines. Good news!
#24
Hi Guys,

I think I'm in a similar situation to Howard in that the dslchecker site shows my number as being on the Folkingham exchange but with no cabinet number (therefore an EO line).

I've noticed recently that an extra product has appeared on the dslchecker against my number - WBC ADSL 2+ (17Mbps) - is this all we're going to get on EO lines? Or should I be seeing an FTTC product listed against my number soon?

Thanks
Kaz

Good morning Steve,

Brilliant news that cabinets 3 and 4 in Folkingham are live. Will the weekly news on Friday eventually show when the new EO cabinet goes live, as have never noticed EO line announcements to date for any other village location.

Howard

Good Morning Kaz,

Can you please send me (in confidence) your full address, postcode and landline number, to my E Mail address below. From there, I can look into your query more effectively.

Good Morning Howard,

I will get the latest on the EO lines later this week.

I see your point re. not seeing EO lines mentioned elsewhere. This is because, when we upgrade EO lines, we push them through a new cabinet and upon completion, we would announce a new cabinet number, not an EO number. When we get this week's update, I will ask what the new number will be.

Hi Guys

Hate to Hijack a Thread, but I'm also in Folkingham and been eagerly waiting for fibrotic, and as such have been following this Thread with interest.

This morning I was downloading a movie, and it took just 15 minutes! I done a speed test and found I was getting a balmy 17mbps!

Does this mean we’re now on Fiberoptic? I thought I had to upgrade to get these sort of speeds (I’m with BT)?
#29
Hi James

Thanks for your message. Would you possibly be able to send it your full address to onlincolnshire@lincolnshire.gov.uk and we'll check your connection for you. You do need to upgrade to benefit from an FTTC product, but we'll have a look into this and let you know whats going on..

Kind regards

Naomi

Hi Naomi, and thank you for your quick responce

I have sent you an e-mail, but please don't change anything!
#31
James

That sounds like you have been shifted to ADSL+ rather than fibre. Having checked my address (Churchfields) it now says up to 17mbps whereas have always been on about 6.5 mbps. Shouldn't be long for the real deal though!

Howard
#32
Hi James,

Your speed increase is due to the Folkingham exchange (not the cabinets) having been upgraded recently by BT from ADSL to ADSL2+. This means instead of having download speeds of 'up to 8 Mbps' you now have available speeds of 'up to 21 Mbps'.

This will be of no extra charge to you & with some ISP's may even reduce your monthly broadband costs.

So basically you're not fibre optic, if you want that you will still need to upgrade your connection with your internet service provider.

Hope that sort of helps.
#33
Steve Good morning,

Will the EO cabinet number reveal be mixed in with the general Friday report today or via the forum?.

Regards

Howard
#34
Steve,

Your Project Update today brought splendid news. Using the BT Broadband Availability Check I now see I have a new cabinet - being No.4. Also not that the cabinet is listed as live. Woo hoo.

Howard
#35
Howard,

I can confirm that Terry is right - I too noticed the availability of ADSL2+ on our exchange (and the new cabinet 4 assignment). All I had to do was change a setting on my router from ADSL to ADSL2+ to get an immediate jump in speed from 6.5Mbps to 14.5Mbps (as reported by SpeedTest.net).

Might be worth a fiddle with your router although hopefully FTTC should show up as available on our cabinet by the end of this week (fingers-crossed).

Kaz

Kaz,

Yes many thanks. A call to Plusnet last Friday elicited info that SDSL 2+ was available and I should get the benefit after some software fiddling at their end. Nothing happened over the weekend but another call Monday and they found something at their end they hadn't done - and now have 14 Mbps. I don't use Plusnet's router but the better BT Home Hub 5... i've told a few neighbours of the goodies awaiting and hopefully coming soon!

Kaz,

I'm wearing out the BT checker lol. This 2 week wait is unbearable. I'm in Delhi checking today...no sign of FTTC yet. Speed at hotel an astonishing 0.03 Mbps ;)

Hi Howard,

I'm doing the same here, although my locations (Peterborough and folkingham) aren't quite so exotic!

Reading other posts on this forum, even when fttc appears on the checker we'll still have more waiting to do to get the service activated/installed!!!!!

Dear Steve/Naomi

Possibly my next to last comment (the last will be when i'm switched on :) ). Its been 2 weeks since cab 4 in Folkingham was enabled. Is the 2 week wait to order a rough guide, i.e. dependent on when BT update their records (I bet on Monday lol).

Cheers

Dear Howard

Thanks for your message. Sometimes it takes a bit longer when it is a new cabinet in place of EO lines as there's more information to be entered onto the computer systems. Please send through your full address to onlincolnshire@lincolnshire.gov.uk and I'll look into this for you

Kind regards

Hi guys,

Just to echo Howard's query regarding folkingham cabinet 4, it's now the 19th November and still no sign of FTTC products showing up on the DSL checker.

Any idea what's causing the delay?
#43
Good Morning Kaz,

I have checked your location in relation to the new cabinet and you are well within the Superfast range. I do know that with some EO cabinets we get a few weeks delay where records are updated and I assume this to be the case here.
I will chase BT again.

Kaz and Steve,

Thanks Steve. My phone is getting screen burn from checking the BT checker :)

Hopefully next week...but away in Mongolia from today so maybe news next Friday when I return.

Kaz and Stephen,

Landed in HK and did my check. It'seems there! Just ordered Plusnet to come out 11 December. Speed anywhere between 18.5 and 39.7 megs....

Howard
#46
Hi Steve,

It appears your enquiries did the trick! As Howard as mentioned FTTC products are now showing on Folkingham cabinet 4. Thanks for looking into this for us.

Considering the massive investment being made to roll out fibre, I'm a little disappointed with the projected speed though - max 30Mbps. I was hoping for the full 70+ to be honest. With the ever-increasing pace of tech change and shift towards internet-based streaming (with UltraHD round the corner), I wonder how long 30Mbps will be considered 'super-fast'...

Anyway - that aside, I'm please we've finally got fibre available and I'll be upgrading as soon as possible!

Thanks again Steve for all your help during this process.

Cheers

Big day for Kaz and myself tomorrow Friday 11th. Both being switched on. I'll report back on speeds.

Having poked around I see Infinity 1 is just a cap on the exchange. So theoretically Infinity 2 could be opened up one day without any hardware work. Am I correct?

Cheers for all the info leading up to 4K day in this house.

Please do let us know how it goes.

A small hiccough in the plan. Received email that I would not need to be in for upgrade... so was out when BT engineer called. As I thought it should have been an interior call so re-booked for 4 Jan (no extra charge though!).

Happy Christmas to all in the team.

Good Morning Howard,

Many thanks for the update.

Have a great Xmas and a prosperous New Year.

Steve,

All done. I had a bet I would be about 29 mbus so pleasantly surprised I am running on 34 mbps with 2 mbps upload.

My Netflix 4K streams are working well. Many thanks for all your help. Here's to Infinity 2 one day.☺

Regards

Howard.
